The Little Mermaid Jr. was West Broward Drama’s latest production, and it was received highly by viewers. The production took place on January 22nd and January 23rd and was worked on by a team of high skilled drama students who wanted to see this performance come to life.
The Little Mermaid Jr. followed the plot of Disney’s little mermaid but included more musical aspects. It’s original songs included, She’s in love and Human stuff. Which added to the scene in fun and catchy ways. The cast list for the production included, drama one students who hadn’t done any plays prior, which added to the childlike whimsy of the musical.
The play included an astounding set that included King Triton’s throne, Ariel’s den, Ursula’s cave, and even Prince Eric’s ship. These elements were controlled by the tech team and were crucial to making the play look correct, the lighting even did its magic as it often made the play feel more immersive, for example when Prince Eric was being saved by Ariel the lights were turned off as she sang to replicate what Prince Eric was experiencing at the time. Audience members claimed that the energy from the performance could be felt through the crowds and that the drama one students held a lot of potential for any future productions.

“The Little Mermaid was one of the best junior productions I’ve seen yet! I could tell they were enjoying their own production and it gave the musical more color. Both the main roles and the ensemble were blooming with potential and talent, and I’m so excited to see them in their future performances!” said Jasleen Espinal, Senior at West Broward High school.
The actors themselves loved the play and worked their hardest through the process of it despite it being their first time. Many of them found it to be a memorable experience and enjoyed it just as much as the audience did.
“I really enjoyed being able to contribute to our wonderful production of The Little Mermaid! Since I was the lead, I got to make friends with most of the cast, from all the scenes we were in together. Another thing I loved about playing the character was that I really got to tone in on acting, since Ariel loses her voice, and has to rely on her ‘body language’,”said Katie Boes, the actor who played Ariel.
