West Broward’s Creative Writing Club recently hosted its latest talent show, and it proved to be a memorable and impactful event for both performers and audience members. Organized by a team of dedicated students and staff, the showcase created a space where creativity and self-expression were encouraged and celebrated.
The event was led by Gabriel Vasquez, an English teacher and the sponsor for the club, who helped coordinate the promotion of the show. The process included spreading awareness throughout the school and giving students an opportunity to sign up and participate. Through teamwork and organization, the event was able to include a wide variety of performances that reflected the talent within the students of West Broward.
“We did a bake sale, we put out flyers, and we made sure to spread it to the English teachers. If any students wanted to sign up, they came to me, and I put their name on the list. We definitely posted on our Creative Writing Instagram too,” said Vasquez.
The talent show featured a wide range of performances, which included poetry, spoken word, original songs, and karaoke. Each act brought something different to the stage that helped to create an engaging experience for the audience.
“I did karaoke with my friends and it was a really fun experience. I thought I would feel nervous but they cheered and clapped for me and that really made me feel welcome”, said senior at West Broward, Folashade Oyeneye.

The leadership team also played a major role in planning the event. Mega Gamesh, president of the Creative Writing Club, helped organize the show by drawing inspiration from prior open mic events, and Ash Criado, vice president of the Creative Writing Club worked alongside Izzy DiBenedetto, the event coordinator, to help promote the event with bake sales and flyers as well as prepare for it.
“We primarily took reference off of existing programs in open mics and such, and then added our own little spin to it. It’s primarily a place where motivated students present themselves and put themselves out there,” said Gamesh.
The performances themselves left a strong impression on both organizers, participants, and those who watched the performances. The range of talent and the energetic and fun mood brought the whole event together.
“Honestly, I thought they were great. We love all of the students that end up performing on the talent shows. They’re all great,” said Gamesh.
The impact of the event extended beyond just entertainment, as it created a meaningful and supportive space for students to express themselves.
“All of the performances at our talent shows always have a large impact on me because it makes me glad to know that me and my team can organize a safe space for students to express themselves,” said Criado.
Overall, the Creative Writing Club’s talent show continues to be a meaningful tradition at West Broward, as it gives students the opportunity to share their voices, connect with others, and celebrate creativity in a supportive environment.
“All of these performances show how powerful it is when students are given a space to express themselves and share their voices,” said Vasquez.
