The Student Government Association (SGA) held elections for office for 2026-2027. There were multiple candidates elected to new positions. The positions included President, first Vice President, second Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary. Each student will have distinct roles and responsibilities.

These positions are vital to the success of SGA. Leaders have shared attributes that are crucial for planning events successfully and contributing to West Broward High School. The newly assembled Executive Board will be responsible for implementing and planning future events.

“They are the voice of the student body. They meet with administration, with small issues like putting toilet paper in bathrooms, to big issues like classes. They’re here to support school spirit and create projects that ensure all students feel included,” said Donna Yard, SGA sponsor and biology teacher at West Broward.

The SGA Executive Board will be led by President-elect Himaganga Nair. Nair worked tirelessly during her campaign to demonstrate how she will serve this role. It’s important to her that student voices are heard and to improve student concerns.

“I always wanted to run for SGA president, ever since freshman year. It’s something I’ve been building up to for my entire high school career. My message was that I would actually improve the school, and I would apply all the students’ concerns and what they wanted to change about the school,” said junior Nair, SGA president elect.

In SGA, there are two vice president positions. The first vice president assists the president and oversees SGA committees. One main task is to motivate members to participate in our mission by helping compile a scrapbook of all SGA events. The second vice president is appointed and serves on the Interorganization Council (IOC). The newly elected first Vice President is Isabella Estrada and the second Vice President is Amelie Gayoso-Leon.

“I have to make a scrapbook of everything SGA has completed like Homecoming and games. I get pictures and make a description. Overall making SGA together as one,” said Estrada, a sophomore at West Broward.

The newly elected secretary is Lily Adesina and the newly elected treasurer is Carolina Rogers. The treasurer is tasked with financial responsibilities, whereas the secretary must keep records of meetings and activities. These positions are important for keeping SGA running smoothly and effectively.

“The treasurer is all about money, they have to follow policies for receiving money and are in charge of fundraising. Their job is to make sure we know how much money we have and need. The secretary is all about doing minutes for every meeting, having people sign up for field trips, and keeping record of field trips,” said Yard.

The current student body at West Broward High voted for the candidates who will begin their term next year. Each candidate was elected for their knowledge, hard work ethic, and persistence to do the job.

“I am hoping that they are excited to do this job. It is a thankless job sometimes where you kind of feel the weight of being excellent over the joy of showing your excellence. I’m really hoping they are able to sit down and breathe and see that what they’re doing is great.
No matter what the feedback is, or their feeling that day,” said Yard.
