West Broward Field Day is An annual event that has started this school year on February 20th. The day is to celebrate the current graduating year but is open for all to enjoy. Though attendance isn’t mandatory it is highly encouraged for students to participate in the games. The field day is hosted by the Student Government Association (SGA) club to encourage students to become well-rounded individuals.

The games included in field day were; teacher Simon Says, knockout basketball, sponge pass, the potato sack race, three-legged race, four rounds of the 100 meter dash and 2 rounds of tug of war. The seniors started strong winning teacher Simon Says and Sponge Pass. The freshmen were no slouch- es as they won knockout basketball. It would seem Juniors are best on their feet because Juniors took the win in the potato sack race, three-legged race, and the 1st round of the 100-meter dash. Both freshmen and sopho- mores won 1 round of the 100-meter dash respectively. Finally, Seniors came back with a vengeance taking the win in the final round of the 100-meter dash and both rounds of tug of war.

“I just feel like so many students here are dedicated and actually like their school. And i think field day is a sort of repayment in for that so the students can enjoy them- selves and we can get some school spirit flowing because we have been missing that from some students lately,” commented West Broward grade 11 assistant principal Diana Hurtado.

The standout winners of the event were the seniors getting 5 victories in total followed by the juniors in 2nd with 3 victories the freshman with 2 and in last sophomores with 1. This day was an overall success for all involved and showed how the field day is a capital idea now and will be for many years to come.

“It’s cool to see how many people are showing up for field day or even how many people voted in the online poll. I’m just glad people are participating it shows how dedicated they are to our school and that’s always great,” stated grade 11 student Katiana Theodat

For many years now, west Broward has had events similar to field day every school year, providing stu- dents with fun and a great opportunity to meet new people but none quite like field day has. SGA as a club was started to allow students to govern themselves and to choose their path in life, which is one of the reasons that SGA started the field day tradition. Whether it be voting in a poll and choosing which games will be on the day or even simply choosing whether or not to participate shows West Broward stu- dents’ ability to choose.

“It’s nice that students get the chance to express themselves and I don’t think there is another event like it this year, when the kids get to be kids again,“ stated English teacher Diane Harrison.
